Why we run our own machines

Ours in the yard, ready for your tract

We keep our land clearing equipment in San Antonio at our own yard off Culebra Road, so a job doesn’t wait on a rental counter. Since the machines are ours, the one that suits your ground is the one that goes out. Behind them is an owner-run land clearing company, and David runs the crews.

Track Loader and Mulcher Head at work on a Hill Country tract

Track loader and mulcher head

Our main rig is a Cat 299D3 XE compact track loader running a Fecon Bull Hog BH74SS forestry mulcher on high flow hydraulics. It carries most of our forestry mulching. Its tracks spread the weight, so low ground pressure leaves lighter marks on pasture than a wheeled machine, though we’ll still wait out soaked clay.

Mini Excavator With a Hydraulic Thumb at work on a Hill Country tract

Mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb

A Cat 308 CR mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb digs, grabs and carries, and it’s our first pick for mesquite removal. It pulls stumps, roots out huisache, and lifts old barn tin onto the trailer. On a small lot, it works where a dozer has no room.

Dozer for Pads and Ranch Roads at work on a Hill Country tract

Dozer for pads and ranch roads

Our Cat D3 dozer does the heavy part of building pad construction, pushing and spreading fill for house and barn pads. It also shapes ranch roads and cuts fire breaks along the edge of cedar acreage. It’s the machine that sets grade before a slab goes down.

Root Rake, Grapple and Stump Grinder at work on a Hill Country tract

Root rake, grapple and stump grinder

Attachments let one loader do several jobs. A root rake combs roots and rock out of cleared ground, and a grapple bucket picks up logs and brush. A Diamond Mowers stump grinder attachment takes stumps down below the surface, and that’s how our stump grinding gets done.

Trucks and Trailers for Haul Off at work on a Hill Country tract

Trucks and trailers for haul off

An F-450 pulls our gooseneck dump trailer, which hauls brush, tin and old fencing off a tract for debris removal. A tandem dump truck carries spoil, rock and fill when there’s more than the trailer should take on one trip.

Matching the machine to the ground

Ground around San Antonio splits at the Balcones Escarpment, and the machine choice splits with it. North and west, Ashe juniper grows on thin limestone, so the mulcher goes first and leaves a mat of mulch over soil that can’t spare any. South and east, mesquite and huisache sit in clay and sandy loam, and the excavator digs them out because a shredded stump sprouts again. Pads and roads call for the dozer, while tight lots get the smaller machines. Once the clearing’s done, the same crew handles the site preparation that comes before a slab.

Did you know: An early 1900s steam-era crawler tractor churning through

Did you know?

On Thanksgiving Day 1904, Benjamin Holt tested a tractor on tracks in the soggy delta mud of Roberts Island, California. His company photographer is said to have remarked that it crawled like a caterpillar. The name stuck, and it’s still on yellow machines today.
